In this photograph by Karl Halla, pedestrians wait at the northwest corner of Flinders Lane and Swanston Street as a Morris Minor passes through the intersection. All of the buildings visible in this photograph have since been demolished. On the east side of Swanston Street, the buildings await demolition to make way for the City Square. Whelan the Wrecker has already fixed their sign to one building (at centre); and another, the Cathedral Hotel (at right), has an auction sign advertising the sale of the hotel’s furniture and equipment. At left is a branch of the State Savings Bank of Victoria, which was also demolished, and the site was redeveloped in the 1970s with an office building that incorporated a branch of the bank.
